The TD Charitable Foundation awards Housing For Everyone Grant to Caritas Communities
Media Release – March 4, 2021
BRAINTREE, MA – Caritas’s Housing For Everyone grant award is among the highest of all 32 grants and among other recipients in MA, NH, and ME.
Caritas Communities has been named one of 32 recipients of the 15th Annual Housing For Everyone grant program from the TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank. As a non-profit housing provider dedicated to preventing homelessness, Caritas created the Homelessness Prevention Program in 2014, which provides emergency rental assistance grants to residents experiencing financial hardship. This grant from the TD Charitable Foundation will help Caritas meet the overwhelming increase in the need for rental assistance created by COVID-19, which is expected to reach $800,000 or more by the end of 2021.
“Caritas Communities has developed a comprehensive rental assistance program to help individuals impacted by COVID-19 avoid homelessness and achieve self-sufficiency,” said Steve Webb, Regional President, Southern New England, TD Bank. “Being awarded the 15th Annual Housing For Everyone grant is an acknowledgment of Caritas Communities’ dedication to ensuring an inclusive recovery from the pandemic.”
The Housing For Everyone grant competition supports TD’s longstanding commitment to community enrichment through TD’s corporate citizenship platform, the TD Ready Commitment. The TD Ready Commitment seeks to help people feel more confident, not just about their finances, but about their future. It is driven by a central belief that together we can help build inclusive futures where everyone has the opportunity to succeed in a changing world. As part of the TD Ready Commitment, TD targets the US $775 million in total by 2030 towards community giving in four critical areas: Financial Security, a more Vibrant Planet, Connected Communities, and Better Health. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had an immense and disproportionate impact on those most vulnerable, including renters and that’s why the 2020 Housing For Everyone program focused on organizations working to keep families and individuals who rent in their homes.
“Our residents work in the low wage service industry and gig-economy jobs that have been devastated by the pandemic. They often live paycheck to paycheck and have no cushion to withstand extended periods without income,” said Karin Cassel Mitterando, executive director of Caritas Communities. “We are committed to helping our residents retain their housing and avoid overwhelming debt burdens during this traumatic event. Individuals that are stably housed will be in a better position for re-employment once the economy opens up. The incredible generosity of TD Charitable Foundation will make it possible.”
In total, TD Charitable Foundation awarded $4.9 million for the 2020 Housing For Everyone program, as part of the more than $20 million that TD has allocated to help strengthen community resilience and COVID-19 recovery through the TD Community Resilience Initiative.
